Pamplemousses Botanical Garden

Officially named the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic Garden, Pamplemousses Botanical Garden is located in the village of Pamplemousses in Mauritius. Considered the oldest botanical garden in the Southern Hemisphere, it forms an important part of the island's botanical and cultural heritage.

Covering approximately 33 hectares, the garden has a history dating back to the 18th century. What began as a small garden gradually developed into an extensive botanical collection featuring plants introduced from tropical regions around the world.

Giant Water Lilies and Ponds

One of the garden's best-known sights is the pond filled with giant Amazon water lilies. The broad, circular leaves of Victoria amazonica, with their distinctive raised edges, create one of the most recognisable scenes in the garden.

Other ponds feature different varieties of water lilies and lotus plants. Tropical trees, palms and walking paths surrounding the water create much of the peaceful landscape associated with Pamplemousses Botanical Garden.

Palm Collection

The garden is home to around 80 different species of palms. The collection includes species native to the Mascarene Islands as well as palms introduced from other tropical regions of the world.

Talipot palms, bottle palms and Royal Palms can be seen in different parts of the garden. Long avenues lined with palms are among the most characteristic elements of its historic landscape.

Spices and Tropical Plants

Spice plants have played an important role in the history of the garden. Clove, cinnamon, nutmeg and black pepper are among the tropical species associated with the botanical and agricultural development of Mauritius.

Sections devoted to medicinal and economically important plants add another dimension to the garden, making it more than simply a landscaped green space.

History of the Garden

The development of the garden at Pamplemousses accelerated during the 18th century, particularly under the influence of Pierre Poivre. Spices and tropical plants from different parts of the world were introduced and cultivated here, helping the site develop into an important botanical centre.

The garden was known by different names over the course of its history. Today it bears the name of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the first Prime Minister of Mauritius, while Pamplemousses Botanical Garden remains its widely recognised name.

In addition to its plant collections, the garden includes historic walking paths, old stone bridges, ponds and structures around the Mon Plaisir area that contribute to its historical character.

The combination of mature tropical trees, shaded paths, water features, open lawns and diverse palm species gives Pamplemousses Botanical Garden a distinctive landscape and makes it one of Mauritius' notable botanical heritage sites.
