Port Louis

Located on the northwestern coast of Mauritius, Port Louis is the country's capital and principal port city. Its development was closely linked to the French colonial period and the strategic importance of its harbour in the Indian Ocean. Today, government institutions, commercial districts and everyday city life are concentrated within the same urban centre.

Markets and City Life

Port Louis Central Market is one of the city's most characteristic places. The market sells fruit, vegetables, spices, local food, handicrafts and a variety of everyday products, offering a direct view of local life in Mauritius.

The city's multicultural character can also be seen around Chinatown, in its religious buildings, street food and historic architecture. Narrow streets, small businesses and street art create a different atmosphere from the more modern commercial parts of Port Louis.

Caudan Waterfront and the Harbour

Located beside the harbour, Caudan Waterfront represents the more modern side of Port Louis with shops, restaurants, cafes and cultural spaces. Central Market, Chinatown and several important places around the harbour are relatively close to one another, making the city centre suitable for exploring on foot.

History and Aapravasi Ghat

Aapravasi Ghat is one of the most important historical sites in Port Louis. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the former immigration depot preserves remains connected with the history of indentured labourers who arrived in Mauritius during the 19th century.

One of Port Louis's defining features is the close combination of traditional market life, the historic harbour, multicultural neighbourhoods and modern waterfront areas within the same city centre.
